Modern Mother
16 x 20 inches
Mixed media painting on canvas
Materials: paper, pattern paper, ephemera, marker, adhesive, ink, acrylic and oil paint on canvas
Artist Notes:
"Modern Mother" is part of my ongoing series of self-portraits, where I explore themes of transformation and evolving identity. In this piece, I present my middle-aged mom body, embracing its reality and beauty.
The painting features a woman seated, looking contemplatively to the side, with a serene expression. Her figure is highlighted with soft, natural tones, contrasting against a textured background of muted greens and grays. The use of a halo around her head invokes a religious trope, elevating the figure to a sacred level and reflecting on the pressures modern mothers face to embody saint-like qualities.
This work delves into the societal expectations placed on mothers to be everything to everyone, highlighting the sanctity and complexity of modern motherhood.
